Ruhleben was a concentration camp (Germany's first) for civilian prisoners of War, it included captured merchant mariners, British nationals born in Germany and who may have lived in Germany for all of their lives, and some German nationals. It was an extensive camp set up at the Ruhleben race track and many if not most of the inmates were housed in very recently evacuated horse stalls and loose boxes. At first facilities and health care were grim. Gradually a working arrangement between the German administration, the British National prisoners and other prisoners was put into place. It issued its own postage stamps, established an education system, sports and theatre with a varied programme. [General Information: 10% discount for all direct purchases.
